In one instance, there was a large drainage repair company that had installed a french drain for a customer. As we examined the previous work to provide the customer a quote, we discovered that the method in which the french drain was installed prevented any water from entering the drainage pipe with two problems. First, the filter fabric around the pipe was too thick, even one layer prevented water from entering the pipe. Secondly, there was nothing to keep the dirt from entering the gravel - so the gravel was completely choked with dirt. To top that off, the company did not provide an escape for the downspouts - so the runoff from approximately half the roof was pouring out onto that side of the house - simply propogating the problem.
Here is what we did to fix the problem: we completely removed the old french drain, and disposed of it. We graded the ditch properly, and laid thick plastic in the ditch. We laid a light layer of gravel in it, and placed perforated, solid PVC pipe with the holes up in the ditch. The gutters were hard-piped into the drain, and we installed a cleanout for ease of access. We then wrapped the pipe with filter fabric that is guaranteed for 30 years, and allows water to easily pass through it. Then, we put landscape edging into the sides to keep dirt out, and laid gravel, and then decorative gravel in the drain. We are very confident this will last many years with a slight bit of proper maintenance.
